   Lovesey was a generous mentor to younger writers, and was renowned for   
   his witty speeches comprising extracts from the “fan letters” he   
   received.   
      
   One fervent admirer of his books wrote: “I have not written to thank you   
   because I assumed you died many years ago. My husband says he thinks you   
   may still be alive. We had quite an argument about it last night. I   
   suppose it does not really matter, but we would be most grateful to have   
   the question cleared up.”   
      
   Peter Lovesey married Jacqueline Lewis in 1959. She survives him with   
   their son Phil, also a crime novelist, and daughter Kathy.
