   Why not comment?

On family values, he was quite conservative, reflecting the era in which
he grew up. He didn't shy away from criticizing black-on-black crime and
made hypothetical statements that he might fear black teenage boys if he
encountered them on the street as potentially violent.

His civil rights advocacy was mixed. He was no Thomas Sowell and failed
to take an introspective look at the unintended consequences of Great
Society federal welfare expansions. He offered a mixed message, plenty
of speeches about taking advantages of opportunities offered by America
as it got less repressive and pulling oneself up by one's own bootstraps
contrasted with advocacy for quotas to address past discrimimation.

His thinking evolved little beyond 1960s-era liberalism.

But as a Chicago sout' side political power broker, he was an absolute
   disaster. The politicians whom he promoted were lousy for the most part;
Bobby Rush was not one of them. Robin Kelly is but she's gotten out from
under his influence and survived his political decline. Please note that
it was Michelle and not Barack who was friends with one of his
daughters; Barack was smart enough to maintain independence from
   Jackson.

There were notorious incidents in which he extorted big business for
opportunities for his children. They obtained liquor distributorships as
state post-prohibition laws artificially restrict entry into the
wholesale market. Promoting his own son Jesse Jr for Congress, Jr and
wife were convicted of accepting bribes and both went to prison. Jr is
on the primary ballot to succeed Kelly who is running for Senate.
