Here is a very definitive web site with just about everything
there is to know about the area:

   http://www.americansouthwest.net/utah/monument_valley/

The important point - it's entirely within the Navajo
Reservation system and therefore administered by the
Navajo people who do not take kindly to intruders and
trespassors who violate their "closed to public" areas.

The other important point - it's MILES from anywhere
and very hot this time of year, dry and desolate. Help
is hours away if you need it, and medical help even
further. There is only ONE paved road through the area.
Unpaved roads can be treacherous during rainy season.
