   No it wasn't.  Parker made no secret of the fact that the inspiration for   
   Spenser was Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe, another very literate PI -in   
   the books if not in the movies -  As a matter of fact Spenser's first novel   
   _The Godwulf Manuscript_ was practically a re-write of Chandler's _ The Big   
   Sleep _ Parker first wrote it as an University exercise I believe.
