   Grant wanted to run in 1876 but dropped out. And that is a very interesting   
   tale in itself, because he was talking out of both sides of his mouth, only   
   letting those closest to him know that he actually did want to run. He   
   publicly renounced his ambitions all through 1875 and said nothing about it   
   at all in 1876.   
      
   Custer would never have won the presidency unless the other side   
   (Republicans in his case) was completely inept. I don't think running for   
   office ever entered his head seriously.
