From: joe@blow.com              Nelson Miles was the one who really wanted to be president, but had to       satisfy himself as head of the Army under Teddy Roosevelt. Roosevelt loathed       Miles, "a strutting peacock," as he called him. Wouldn't even attend Miles'       retirement ceremony.              Miles liked Custer, but of the two Miles was the one who exploited political       opportunity wherever he found it, whether with the Republicans or the       Democrats and would absolutely have elbowed Custer aside for any general's       stripes available at the time. Custer's wife Libby was a good campaigner in       Washington but her hubby had only military ambitions and the point is moot       after June 25, 1876.       --       Iyotake              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
