   You are quite correct. The major part of the problem was two fold as I   
   see it.   
   First the grab for the land.   
   The mountain men, were not a threat to the people. They were not after   
   any land just the fur's. However at the same time they opened up inroads   
   to the " Great American desert". They returned to St Louis or other   
   places talking about the   
   land and how wonderful it was plus it was free. Therefore starting the   
   western migration.   
   The next big thing was the push to  teach the Indians the "proper"   
   religion. To convert them to what was felt as a saving of souls. From   
   the time the first whites stepped foot on this land we have tried to   
   change there religious beliefs to fit ours. We began to strip them of   
   there own culture, religion, way of life. So in the larger picture of   
   things it's no wonder they   
   fought to keep there way of life.
