From: joe@blow.com              The feds here deliberately starved Sitting Bull and his followers in order       to force them to surrender to the US at Ft. Buford, Dakota Territory in June       1881.              This was the tactic they used against all our Plains tribes in order to       force them to accept deliberate treaty violations by the government, like       not supplying sufficient resources such as draft animals and seed to make       the transition from hunting to farming. They had to balance that federal       budget, you know, and the Indians had no way of raising much political       ruckus other than rebelling. Some of this was at the root of the Riel       provisional government of 1885 and the subsequent war.              Pretty evil and pathetic, but 99% of the population of Canada knows nothing       about it. We have a lot of sleeping dogs in our historical community :(       --       Best regards,       Todd Sauve              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
