From: yumyum@dontmail.com              May 29, 2009 news item:              Public input sought on Long Walk trail              The National Park Service is hosting a series of public meetings to discuss a       draft plan to study creation of a trail commemorating the Long Walk through       portions of Arizona and New Mexico. The first one is scheduled Tuesday in       Santa Fe. (June 2, 2009)              Navajo and Mescalero Apache people were removed from their home lands in 1863       and 1864 and forced to march 100 to 500 miles to Bosque Redondo in Fort       Sumner. Many of the tribal people died during the walk, according to tribal       historians and the National Park Service.              The proposed Long Walk national Historic Trail is made up of 1,350 miles of       land routes in the two states. The National Park Service will work with the       Navajo Nation, Mescalero Apache Tribe, private property owners and other       federal, state and local agencies to create the routes.              Other public meetings are planned in Crownpoint (June 15), Window Rock (June       16), Chinle (June 17) and Tuba City, (June 18).              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
