From: Gud-dam@dontemailme.com              In article <20030814171708.06868.00000596@mb-m03.aol.com>, drsmith666@aol.com       says...                     >So.... the "OLD WEST", as we think about it was nothing more than a "temporary       >situation" where trailblazers settled and waited until the civilization of the       >east caught up with them? I wonder if they realized it?              Here's my own example of 'growing up in the west' -       that being in El Paso, TX. Speaking strictly of       boys here - girls all wore dresses to school in       my youth - no boy would dare come to school in       knickers or corduroy pants for more than a few       days. The first thing parents of 'immigrants'       from the east were required to do was provide       "blue jeans" - usually Levi or Lee brands in those       days - for their boys to wear to school. Other       than my "Sunday" clothes, I never owned anything       other than jeans as a boy, and certainly wouldn't       have been caught out on the school playground in       anything else. And I wore my first pair of shorts       ONLY for playing tennis. Shorts on men were       unheard of in public until sometime in the 1960s-70s.              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
