   I'm sure he's close to retirement, although I suspect it's hard to   
   really retire. Probably get lots of phone calls of the "where can we   
   find..." sort.   
      
   I probably need to go see him. We're working on a project to come up   
   with images of every sheriff of Caldwell County. Things go along pretty   
   easy for the 20th century. As we get back much into the 19th, it becomes   
   clear that the best we're going to be able to do is maybe come up with   
   photos of the children of sheriffs, in order that our drawn images bear   
   some family resemblance and are something more than just generic men. We   
   have a good, complete list, since, some years ago, an article was done   
   for the Sheriff's Association of Texas magazine that was, if I recall,   
   someone's masters thesis in history. There was quite a revolving door on   
   the office during reconstruction, when appointees would refuse the oath   
   and were replaced, again and again, until one of them agreed.
