   They might be a bit old-fashioned for today's kids but you could take   
   a look at the novels of Will James. He wrote "Smokey, The One Man   
   Horse" (1926), which won the Newberry Medal for children's   
   literature. His books are still in print.   
      
   As a kid (long time ago} I enjoyed the "Boys of the X-Bar-X" series   
   (Forget the author).
