I wouldn't worry about "popular" because you
can usually spell that "pulp." With all the
excellent NON-fiction out there, written to read
as novels, I would direct a child's reading that way.

A 10-yr old, who is actually able to read
and comprehend what is read (a rarity perhaps),
can get a lot of excitement from non-fiction.
Here is but one example, although it's set
on the 'western frontier' at a time when that
   frontier was the Atlantic seaboard:

LOVE AND HATE IN JAMESTOWN - John Smith,
Pocahontas, and the heart of a new nation.

   by David A. Price, 2003

I know that sounds like a very boring title,
but the book is a fascinating account of
   early American history, pre-Pilgrim days.
And there is plenty of violence related within
to hold the attention of most 10-yr olds, I suspect.
