I raised five kids, and that was in the days
before Nintendo and the home computer. All
I had to compete with was TV - there were no
VCRs. But still it was a challenge to instill
any sort of reading desire in my kids, with
all the competition, even then, for their attention.
I didn't care what they read - as long as they
would read - even comic books if that was all
they could be made to read. But it was a
constant struggle. And so I don't know the
answer for today's kids with so many more
distractions, other than to say that at least
web site participation requires a modicum of
reading ability - and emailing encourages some
ability to type and spell effectively.
