Pistols are louder than rifles in general because you're a lot closer
to the muzzle blast, and revolvers even moreso because of the gaps
between the cylinder and frame. That's my I laugh my ass off every
time I see a revolver with a noise supressor in a movie or on TV. Even
if you dampen the muzzle blast it's still going to make a hell of a
noise. Truth be told, it's not smart to do any shooting without some
hearing protection, as it will all take a toll over time.
Your Vaquero is probably a fine gun, just based on what I know about
Rugers in general. It has the traditional look and style of the Colt
that we've all come to love, but with several nice features that the
Colt doesn't offer, such as the lack of need to go to half cock to
turn the cylinder. I'd bet my hat that it also has their "transfer bar
ignition system", which is a device whereby the hammer does not strike
the firing pin unless the trigger is actually pulled, raising a little
piece that bridges the gap between the hammer face and the firing pin.
This allows you to safely carry it with all 6 chambers loaded, whereas
the Colt, with its firing pin fixed to the face of the hammer, is
recommended for only "5 beans in the wheel", lest it go off if
dropped. Then there's the fact that the Vaquero costs about half as
much as the Colt SAA, which is a nice feature all unto itself. I've
been considering getting one myself as a "fun gun", though my priorty
in that dept right now is one of the reproductions of the Richards
conversions of the Navy Colt I mentioned in an earlier post.
I also just plink for fun. Too lazy to do what's necessary to be
competitive, and there's nowhere around here to engage in that
activity anyway, so it would entail travel that I lack both the time
and inclination for. Sounds like you have a pretty good collection
going. I would also like to eventually have a revolver and rifle
chambered for the same round, probably .44-40 as you have.
