   I can heartily recommend the novels of Terry C. Johnston as an example of a   
   Western writer   
   at the top of his game.   
      
   Pick up a few and read them through. Don't imitate his style but make note of   
   the richness   
   of the historical milieu that pours from his books. He really can transport   
   you,   
   especially his last works dealing with the post-Little Bighorn campaigns of   
   Nelson Miles   
   and "Bad Hand" Mackenzie.   
      
   It is astounding to me that not one of his novels has been turned into a movie.
