|    Self-cocking revolver?    |

From: photodoglv@yahoo.com              Has anyone invented such a thing?              I'm thinking maybe some sort of weight in the handle that moves due to       recoil, or maybe even a clockwork mechanism that you wind up and which       provides enough energy to move the cylinder 5 or 6 times total; set in       motion by the release of the trigger after each shot or recoil (sort of like       the escapement mechanism in a mechanical clock).              Surely someone before me has conceived of such a thing. Not saying it would       be practical, mind you. I'm sure the modern semi-auto is way too efficient       to be replaced by something of which I speak. But in the late 19th century,       before the modern recoil driven semi-auto really entered the scene, I wonder       if someone wasn't tinkering with such a revolver.              What got me to thinking about this is the new History Channel show "Wild       West Tech"; the premise of the show being that the old west was a place of       innovation and that the cowboys, lawmen, townspeople, and the like were all       very inventive in their attempt to master the wild frontier. So...I'm       thinking,       some inventive cowboy is riding herd on some cattle, things are quiet, and       he's       daydreaming. Trying to figure out a way to fire off all 6 shots in his       single action       revolver just a tad faster. Instead of using his thumb, which can be a bit       of a       chore if you've got small hands, or "fanning" the hammer with your free       hand,       which can break the gun, maybe said cowpoke was trying to find a better       way....????              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
