   I seem to remember that Doc was a dentist.  He placed ads in newspapers   
   stating as much.  I believe he even offered refunds for those not satisfied.   
   Unless he had someone else write those ads for him he was probably quite   
   literate.  Being a dentist, even back then, probably entailed some   
   familiarity with the printed word.   
      
   Now, whether he could spell "huckleberry" is another matter altogether...   
      
   The Doc in "Tombstone" in some scenes is quoting Latin, reciting poetry and   
   playing Fredrick F---ing Chopin.  I do not know how true some of that is   
   though some sort of duel in the birdcage with ringo is purported to have   
   happened (In Tombstone it is in the Oriental)
