The particular books I'm talking about are supposed to be a trilogy.
The first one (_Dawn of Fury_) has a fairly clean ending, but the 2nd
one (_The Killing Season_ ) is a cliffhanger. The 3rd one (_Autumn of
the Gun_) is not really a cliffhanger, but ends in a way that leads
directly to a 4th book (_The Border Empire_), which has the son taking
up where his daddy left off, so it ain't really a trilogy after all.
While the first 3 are pretty interesting for their recounting of
various adventures of real historical people, the 4th one is a real
throwback to the old westerns with a pretty corny "twist" ending that
can be seen coming a mile off. Though I understand that there are
other books that involve these same characters, these 4 pretty much
make a complete story, and you could really stop after the 3rd one and
   not have missed anything, IMO.
