From: spammenottsauve@home.com              Every five years or so someone organises a re-enactment ride of the North-West       Mounted Police's       Great March West, which began on July 7, 1874 at Fort Dufferin, Manitoba and       ended at Fort Edmonton       for one original group and in the building of Fort Macleod for the other       larger group.              Clumps from EVERY original group take part; Metis, whites and Plains Indians.       This is one heck of a       long trek, covering about 900 miles one way. Originally a group of NWMP turned       around a rode back to       Manitoba, too. Darned near 2000 miles for a round trip on horse back, with no       guarantee whatsoever       that there wasn't a grizzly death awaiting them just over the horizon!              Though our ancestors were generally small of stature, they had hearts that are       hard to measure. Of       all our nations' historic achievements I count those who came West as the most       courageous and       determined. My hat comes off in salute!       --       Todd              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
