Did you plan on South Rim or North? Summer or not?

I hate to sound discouraging, it IS a huge hole in the earth,
but mostly, you will find scenery and crowds, crowds,
crowds. Especially if you plan on a Summertime visit.

And you can't go to the North Rim from late Fall till mid-Spring,
so that would seem to mean just that.

Don't know about the South Rim, or ghost towns, but again,
be ready to see LOTS of people. I purposely avoided the
South Rim because they apparently require one to leave the
car and use alternate transportation. I can appreciate the need
for that, but ... since my mobility is somewhat limited, that
makes that option unattractive to me.

I spent a couple of nights on the North Rim of the canyon
there last June and to tell the truth, we left saying "never again
to Grand Canyon." Now we went from there to Monument
Valley a bit to the East of the north entrance to the North Rim,
and that did and does merit a return visit by us. We were bowled
over by Monument Valley. Enjoyed a Navajo-guided tour.
(Of course, that is a reservation, not a National Park. If that
   bothers you, enough said.)
