I don't recall where I read it, or if was an actual
account or some piece of fiction, but I'm remembering
some sort of a device that counted each turn of a
wagon's wheel, thereby translating the number or
   revolutions to distance traveled.

Something that those of us who do a lot of cross
country traveling on foot, by bicycle, etc. know
is that for a set pace, we can cover so many miles
in an hours time. In my case I am able to guess my
arrival time with fairly good accuracy because my
average speed on a bicycle is 15mph. I imagine the
old timers could apply the same logic to their time
   traveled.
