   I understand that journal keeping was quite common   
   among military officers. It's my understanding   
   that most military leaders had someone to whom they   
   could dictate who then recorded in handwriting   
   what was said. I have seen the actual journal of   
   at least one such commanding officer, all written   
   by his "secretary" or whatever the aide was called.
