In fact, as another poster has pointed out,
spittoons are still found in some barber
shops and bars/saloons today. In the USA
men went to barber shops (with spittoons)
until the 1970s, when having one's hair
"styled" in a beauty shop became faddish,
and remains so today, with barber shops
   becoming dinosaurs.

In addition to chewing tobacco, which was more popular
in former days, today snuff is a big seller.
You see ads every day in men's magazines
for the popular brands. People who work in
industries in the USA where smoking is not
allowed will opt for snuff or chewing tobacco
when on the job. I'm thinking here of oil
refineries and chemical plants and such.
