I asked my 80 year old mother about all this last night - first time
   we've ever discussed spittoons.

She said when she was growing up in Arkansas that spittoons were
everywhere. They were in every building in multiple locations. She
said that chewing tobacco plugs was very common. The men who did it
often had yellow teeth. After they spit out a plug she remembered
there would sometimes be dark colored drool running out of the side of
   their mouth.
