As someone who had my wisdom teeth "chipped out"
with just such implements, I can testify to the
fact that a mallet and chisel were important to
the trade. There is a term for when the tooth
is attached to the jaw bone with such tenacity
that simply pulling it isn't a solution, and it
must be chipped loose from the bone. It's called
an "impacted tooth" - in my case, both wisdom
teeth on the bottom were "impacted." Incidentally,
all four of my wisdom teeth were removed at one
sitting. I would never have returned for a second
round had I known what it involved, so it's a good
thing it was done at one time!!
