It would be virtually impossible to decide this question,
if one considers the vast number of small communities
that came and went in conjunction with mining acitivities
in remote locations. I'm thinking particularly of those in
the highest reaches of the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.
Places like Silverton and Lake City still exist today,
albeit as mere ghosts of their once bustling selves.
Today, with paved access roads, it's hard to imagine the
challenge of getting heavy ore milling and mining
equipment to these remote sites. To say nothing of the
occasional piano or organ that found it's way to the
   homes of the more sophisticated.

But while it's easy to get the feel of the still
standing old mining towns, many more have disappeared
with only the old mine tailings and occasional
remains of collapsed buildings to bear testament to
   a once active community.
