   >It is, at the very least, an account by a well-known Ranger, and the
   >human comes through, warts and all.

I am not familiar with the names of latter-day
Rangers, so wasn't myself aware of his popularity.
But he must be well-known in certain circles, since
I bought the book at a book signing that occurred in
the rather obscure town of Capitan, NM in an even more
obscure book store and had to wait in a long line.
Not only that, I was the only one in the line that was
purchasing "only" a single copy of his book, meaning
he was signing multiple copies for all of those ahead
of me. I gathered from the chit-chat going
on that most of those in line were Texans, attested
to by the big silver belt buckles and Stetsons worn
by some of the men - as well as their conversation.

I was amazed that Jackson chose to carry through
with writing the book after having his oldest
son convicted and imprisoned for murder. I can't
imagine myself airing my family laundry in such a
candid and public way if I had been in his boots.

An aside in reference to the thread asking about gun belts and
bullet loops; Jackson goes into great detail in his
book describing his arsenal of weapons
and the leather workers who custom-designed his
accessories, such as holsters and gun belts.
