I would not like to be an author who has spent
years researching my subject only to learn that
several other authors beat me to the punch with
their publications on the same subject. It must
be really deflating. It doesn't seem to happen
as often in fiction because it is fiction. But
when writing about historical subjects, there is
usually just so much material available to
everyone writing on the subject. It must be hard
to be the cream on top when it comes to writing
   about specific people/topics.

In my example of Buffalo Bill, Bridger published
his book a couple of years ago, at a time when
I presume McMurtry was still doing his research.
And from what I've seen of both books (haven't
yet read McMurtry) they use the same photo plates.
If McMurtry doesn't offer something drastically
different in the text, I likely won't bother
reading it through. I'll let you know, but I've
got a couple of other books "in progress" so it
may be a week or so.
