   I wonder if that wasn't just a variation on ancients' writings about   
   such things as a purported Egyption method of a plug formed of dung. Not   
   that it wouldn't have worked, for the obvious olfactory reason, if not   
   because of some biological effects.   
      
   Fat (and buffalo fat would have been readily available) might well have   
   something of the desired effect, as likely did a number of sticky   
   substances used in various old cultures.
