I don't know what the policy was then, or what it is now.
But what I do remember, having been a child of WWII,
is all the German memorabilia that came back to the USA
during that era. I seem to recall that even firearms
were okay to ship into the USA as long as they were rendered
inoperable - barrels filled with lead, or whatever.
And I recall seeing Japanese war booty too, just not
as much of it in my memory. Supposedly the Jap canteen I
handled was laced with some sort of deadly poison as
a booby trap for anyone drinking from it. Lots of
bull-hockey associated with a lot of the booty. Samurai
type swords were and still are another very popular item
for shipment home. Nowadays the latter are manufactured
for the tourist trade, but having one actually captured
from a Japanese soldier was a prize of wartime.
