   This thread is getting off the subject of "old west"   
   but since this newsgroup seems to have gone dead   
   anyway, I'll add a bit more to your comments.   
      
   I have known military pilots - flying various types   
   of aircraft - who REGULARLY fly back from foreign excursions   
   with what would be considered "contraband" . This   
   is especially rampant during war emergencies when a   
   larger number of flights outside the USA are made.   
   "Contraband" nowadays often means illegal drugs. There   
   was a conviction of 23 years handed down just a few   
   days ago against a military intelligence officer caught   
   smuggling cocain.   
      
   But there is often a blind eye turned   
   when the "contraband" is "only" liquor, Cuban cigars,   
   jewelry, prescription drugs and etc. Often the pilot   
   or crew member is bringing such items back for personal   
   use. But the intelligence officer just convicted was   
   smuggling "commercial quantities" of cocain.
