   Sometimes I can't read a MS-DOS disk too, what I find works for me is to wait   
   for the BIOS to start booting BeOS, when you see the BeOS splash screen on   
   the screen put your floppy disk in before BeOS itself is booted.  At that   
   point is the disk is not already mounted (depends on boot settings) then the   
   disk can be mounted.
