   30 years ago the company my mom worked for had an IBM mainframe (I don't   
   remember the model) that had 500 to 1,000 users ~> terminals connected   
   to it in the regional office building and hundreds more users from   
   around the multi-state region connected to it remotely.  The mainframe   
   handled everything perfectly fine.
