   The character's origin is in 1870 (prior to the invention of ASCII) by Emile   
   Baudot, in his 5 bit code. The original code was 1 on, 2 on, 3 off, 4 on, 5   
   off. The purpose was to ring the bell in the ticker printer to alert of new   
   information. It was    
   carried forward into ASCII by Western Union.
