   Apparently, the upgrade was done. I finally broke down and did a restart, and   
   it came up with (almost) no problems.   
      
   There are now icons spattered all over the lovely photo that I have for a   
   background. I haven't counted, but it seems as if there's one for each file   
   and directory in my $HOME. How can I get rid of them?
