   Paul, I followed the advice listed on the page you gave me a link to and   
   this solved the problem.   
      
   I added:   
      
   export WEBKIT_DISABLE_DMABUF_RENDERER=1   
      
   to the end of the .profile file and restarted and all help dialog boxes,   
   for all programs, now have visible fonts.   
      
   I do have an NVidia card(GeForce GT 720), btw, and am using a Dell XPS   
   8700 box dated 2014.
