   I have had several failures, in about the last 3-4 decades that I have had   
   a computer at home. I learned not to trust hard drives (or floppy disks,   
   for that matter) even before that.   
      
   I have also seen clients suffer various failures. There was one time we   
   powered down a machine to replace a drive that was showing signs of   
   dodginess, powered it up again ... only to discover that another,   
   different drive would no longer start up.
