   I have now deleted the entire ./cinnamon/ folder and everything still   
   works, so it appears it is no longer needed.

   I have no explanation either. The strangest part is that the files were   
   correctly copied but obviously couldn't be read because they were empty.   
   Who or what wiped the contents I have no idea.
