Whatever we offer people as alternatives, it has to be "frictionless".
If there are 400 million people to help, and we have to spend an hour
with each one, that's 400 million man-hours. There may not be that
many people available to serve as helpers.

Some of the distros, are fairly thinly manned, which indicates that
there was never an excess of talent sitting around with nothing to do
in each distro. Some distros don't have anyone to help with testing.

Look at your local hospital some time, and discover the education
distribution. A lot of the people "running machines", are trainees with
no relevant experience in the health field. When I would need an echo,
the echo technician (they know their stuff), they were spread thin, and
they worked one day a week in five different medical centers. You would
be told "our guy only comes on Wednesday". That's an example of how thin
we run things in the medical field. Linux isn't really all that different,
   in terms of head count.

Google has a project, to make a ChromeBook out of your laptop. The
installer only works with computers that have an iGPU. If it sniffs
an NVidia card, the installer stops, and it does not put any icons
on the screen. No error message is shown. (I was sitting there
watching this, and wondering what the hell they were thinking.)
When I plugged the installer into my laptop (without actually
doing an install), the icons appeared in the GUI, and that's
how I knew what the "problem" was. I expect the procedure would
complete reasonably well, right up to the point you're asked for
a gmail.com address for access to any Store. That comes close to
doing the job, but it still has the rough edges of not
reporting things on screen like it might. And that one, reformats
the entire drive, so don't be leaving your wedding photos on that one.
