   Strange thing: since fixing this, I have noticed that my machine does a   
   brief disk access every hour, exactly on the hour, right to a second. You   
   can hear it going clickety-click. Doesn't seem to be linked to the ntp   
   synchronisation timing, or to any third party apps.
