   As I mentioned to Dave, the Mandriva 2010.0 version of 'cfdisk'   
   automatically (helpfully?) renumbers all existing logical partitions by   
   their physical location on the disk.  If I was to add a new logical   
   partition before the current sda5, the new partition would be sda5, the   
   former sda5 would become sda6, and so on.  As you point out, all   
   references in lilo/grub/fstab by partition number would have to be   
   altered.  References by label or UUID could stay the same, I hope.
