   It's possible that non-standard boot devices like USB flash drives don't   
   appear on your list of choices unless a bootable device is actually   
   connected. My Asus-made Fujitsu motherboard is like that, and it's even   
   older than your Compaq. It also has an option where, if you want to   
   bypass the standard boot device list, you can do so by pressing F12   
   during POST. That gives you a menu of all bootable devices, from which   
   you select the one you want.   
      
   It seems strange to me that HP wouldn't have added a similar option by now.
