   Well, whaddaya know!  I just discovered that even my 2007 Compaq has   
   that option, by pressing ESC during powerup.  I just don't recall seeing   
   it documented anywhere.  My first guess was ESC, and it turned out to be   
   right, because the new box flashes "press ESC for boot menu" at powerup.   
     And both machines do show that flash drive in their list, now that I   
   marked one partition on it as "bootable" -- I think that was what did   
   it.  It also shows up in the BIOS (or whatever it's called now) "select   
   boot order" list.  Thanks for helping me find out something new about a   
   system I've had for over four years!
