   Thanks; I tried them.  At least with those options, it looks like it   
   makes the second directory match the first, updating and deleting the   
   second as necessary.  I can see where some of the time, that would be   
   more appropriate than 'cp -u'.  OTOH sometimes I'd prefer backup files   
   /not/ be deleted.  For example, I want the backup of my book project to   
   keep the first, second, etc. drafts, even though my working directory   
   intentionally only has the current draft.

   I don't think I'm usually backing up anything where ACLs would matter.   
   My backups don't include anything that would be restored by a reinstall.   
     They're mainly /home, /accounts, /usr/local, and /etc (because of all   
   the config files in /etc that I've modified).   
      
   Once I get the new system up, I'll have to rethink my backup methods and   
   where rsync would be appropriate.  For the "hot backup" partition (which   
   I'll be implementing), I can see rsync would definitely be the way to go.
