   You're right, especially now that I've found gparted.  Rather than spend   
   forever planning, I just gave the new machine some 50 GB partitions for   
   various distros.  No point trying for perfection when this is good   
   enough, and meanwhile I still have 300 GB unallocated on a 750 GB drive.
