The ~$100 (US) price was what caught my attention, even if its
capabilities are minimal. If I really want one around that price, maybe
I'd be better off getting something a few years old and running a
   smaller distro on it.

For some of my classes it might be useful, in others it definitely
wouldn't. This fall is another writing course, so I'm guessing it would
   probably be useful there.

   Yep, could be a problem.

Do you mean the laptop computer won't have Wi-Fi, or that most places
don't offer Wi-Fi? I gather much of the campus is a "hot spot". I
remember seeing students in the cafeteria using their laptops without
   any cables.

I don't /need/ a laptop; it was just that the ~$100 price caught my eye.
Would most older laptops be supported by Linux, or is it a
   model-by-model thing?
