Yes, I'm aware of their "memory effect". OTOH just leaving them alone
for a few months effectively discharges them completely. I gather that
advice applies equally to the Nickel-Metal hydride batteries that have
replaced NiCds, now that cadmium is considered a hazardous material in
   the U.S.

From reading the other posts here, that sounds like a slightly
controversial matter! :-) I'll be following this subthread with
interest! Right now, not having a laptop yet, the only Li-ion battery
that I know I have is the one in my cell phone. The problem with
discharging that one is that I may get an important call on it at any
moment, although not likely. Oh, and in my "new" digital camera, but I
have more than one battery for that.

Just to be complete, I'll mention lead-acid batteries, which I have in
my car and my UPS. I gather that, except for "deep cycle" batteries,
those should be kept as close to fully charged as possible.
