So far I've set up two wifi devices with Mageia 2. One of them, a PCI
card using the Broadcom 4318 chip, worked with no troubles using the
drakx configuration tool, once the proper b43 firmware was installed.
The other, a USB device using a Realtec 8192CU chip, didn't work
correctly until I used KDE plasma applet for Gnome's networkmanager to
set up the connection. Word is that some chipsets/drivers work better
with one, some with the other for as yet undetermined reasons, so when
you get to setting things up, if one doesn't work, try the other.

One other potential difference that may be meaningless to your camera
and maybe not is voltage. Alkalines are 1.5 volts, NiMH is 1.2.
