In a separate thread ("Testing multiple distros on one drive"), several of
you observed that I really ought to
understand my bootloader. Searching my documentation and the web, I've
learned a lot but am still confused. So I'd appreciate your help and/or
useful URLs to help me understand:

   * What files should be backed up in order to easily restore a broken or
overwritten bootloader (something that should already have been part of my
   normal backup routine).

   * The URL of a guide to manually editing the bootloader. Alternatively,
there might be common distro-agnostic tools to edit the bootloader
   (Webmin, perhaps?).

My current distro is mdv2010.2, which I think uses Grub legacy (can anyone
confirm this?). I have grub 0.97 installed. Since I'm going to be
installing and testing non-Mandriva distros, I'm interested in learning
about bootloaders generally and not merely Mandriva-specific information.

So far I've found the following, which will probably become more useful to
me once I know what version of Grub I now have:

   Grub legacy tutorial
   http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/grub.html

   Grub 2 tutorial
   http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/grub-2.html

Ditto these manuals that Bit Twister kindly cited in the above-mentioned
   thread:

   Grub legacy manual
   http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/legacy/grub.html

   Grub 2 manual
   http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/grub-documentation.html
